Real-time DGPS Monitoring
Global Positioning System (or GPS) instruments are proving to be very useful for long-term deformation monitoring when deployed in advanced differential GPS (or DGPS) networks. The vertical accuracy of the DGPS instrumentation at a typical project, for example, is typically in the 1-millimeter range (at 1SD) for a 24-hour solution. Engineers are increasingly drawn to DGPS systems for a variety of reasons. The measurements are absolute and three-dimensional, and have excellent long-term stability. Each network is comprised of solid-state electronic components that are reliable and perform well in the field. The signal coverage from the GPS satellites is "always on" which means that it is relatively easy to deploy fixed-in-place sensors that provide continuous measurements. Fixed stations can be quickly installed, and have small footprints. These characteristics make DGPS cost-effective when compared with other monitoring techniques, and establish it as a valuable tool for observation and surveillance of large infrastructure geotechnical projects.

Reservoir Analysis
Oil fields are extremely valuable assets that need to be carefully managed. Reservoir supervisors are tasked with the difficult job of optimizing production without damaging the long term viability of the field. An important tool that managers use is an ongoing deformation surveillance program coupled with active analysis of the data. This establishes an active feedback loop that is essential to understanding the short and long term effects of different production methodologies, and to understanding the effects of different recovery techniques such as steam drives.
